It’s not clear how long the salmon had been dead by the time it was studied, but Craig Bennett at the University of California, Santa Barbara, says he scanned it about an hour after picking it up from the supermarket, so it was definitely already a goner. So what did he and his colleagues find? Bizarrely, a region of the dead salmon’s brain lit up during the task.”

Photo

Photo

"Waggly tail or not, owning a pet comes at a far higher cost than you might imagine. As you watch a large dog bounding out of the back of an SUV, you might mentally reprimand the owner for their choice of vehicle. You would do better to save your indignation for their choice of pet. Because, as we report on page 46, the ecological footprint of our companion animals can dwarf that of even the most gas-guzzling cars. Man’s best friend, it turns out, is the planet’s enemy.”

- Cute, fluffy and horribly greedy - New Scientist

Video

"The history of flu vaccination suggests other reasons to doubt claims that it dramatically reduces..."

“The history of flu vaccination suggests other reasons to doubt claims that it dramatically reduces mortality. In 2004, for example, vaccine production fell behind, causing a 40 percent drop in immunization rates. Yet mortality did not rise. In addition, vaccine “mismatches” occurred in 1968 and 1997: in both years, the vaccine that had been produced in the summer protected against one set of viruses, but come winter, a different set was circulating. In effect, nobody was vaccinated. Yet death rates from all causes, including flu and the various illnesses it can exacerbate, did not budge.”

- The Atlantic Online | Does the Vaccine Matter?

“I have been wasting my tweets letting people know about...

“I have been wasting my tweets letting people know about an empty balloon! The nesting babies are fed bellies-full of plastic by their parents, who soar out over the vast polluted ocean collecting what looks to them like food to bring back to their young. On this diet of human trash, every year tens of thousands of albatross chicks die on Midway from starvation, toxicity, and choking. To document this phenomenon as faithfully as possible, not a single piece of plastic in any of these photographs was moved, placed, manipulated, arranged, or altered in any way. These images depict the actual stomach contents of baby birds in one of the world’s most remote marine sanctuaries, more than 2000 miles from the nearest continent.”

Photo

“how Goldman Sachs pulled off the amazing trick of making...

“how Goldman Sachs pulled off the amazing trick of making $3 billion in three months time, while the entire financial system collapses, foreclosures are at a record and unemployment skyrckets, and the US dollar collapses”

“exploring the spatial qualities of RFID”

“exploring the spatial qualities of RFID”

"The Pentagon pays an average of $400 to put a gallon of fuel into a combat vehicle or aircraft in..."

“The Pentagon pays an average of $400 to put a gallon of fuel into a combat vehicle or aircraft in Afghanistan. … The Pentagon comptroller’s office provided the fuel statistic to the committee staff when it was asked for a breakdown of why every 1,000 troops deployed to Afghanistan costs $1 billion.”

- $400 per gallon gas to drive debate over cost of war in Afghanistan - TheHill.com
